Understanding Solar Grants for Businesses

What is the Non-Domestic Microgen Grant (NDMG)?

The SEAI Non-Domestic Microgen Grant (NDMG) is designed to support businesses, farms, public sector bodies, schools, community centres, and non-profit organisations in Ireland with solar PV installations. This initiative provides financial assistance, reducing upfront costs for commercial solar panel grants.

Eligible installations range from small systems of 1 kWp up to large systems of 1,000 kWp, making solar energy grants for businesses accessible to a variety of industries. Whether you own a small shop or a large commercial facility, this grant can help you save on energy costs while supporting sustainability.

How Much is the Grant Worth?

Grant Amounts and System Sizes

The grant amount is determined by the size of the solar PV system, measured in kWp (peak power output). Below is a breakdown of the potential funding

  • Up to 4 kWp: €2,400
  • 8 kWp: €3,000
  • 15 kWp: €5,100
  • 50 kWp: €12,600
  • Up to 1,000 kWp: Maximum of €162,600

The grant covers the cost of solar panels and their installation but excludes additional equipment such as batteries or immersion diverters. Once your installation is complete and the required documentation is submitted to the SEAI, the payment is processed as a one-time amount.

Who is Eligible for Solar Grants?

"Install was very professional and neat. Very easy to deal with, nothing seemed like an issue to them, even though our roof slates are very difficult to work with (break very easily). The lads also fixed slates in areas of our roof away from the PV install."

How much grant do you get for solar panels?

Under the Non-Domestic Microgen Grant (NDMG), businesses can receive substantial funding based on their system size, for example:

  • Up to 4 kWp: €2,400
  • 8 kW systems: €3,000
  • 15 kp systems: €5,100
  • 50 kW systems: €12,600

What does NDMG mean?

The Non-Domestic Microgen Grant (NDMG) is SEAI's financial assistance programme specifically designed to help businesses and other sectors install solar PV panels to generate electricity on-site. This grant scheme supports organisations in transitioning to renewable energy while reducing their operational costs.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Ireland?

Since 2022, the installation of solar panels on commercial properties has been streamlined. While domestic installations are exempt from planning permission, commercial installations may require specific approvals depending on the system size and location.
It's particularly important to consider Solar Safeguarding Zones (SSZs) near airports or aerodromes where additional regulations may apply.

How long does it take for a SEAI grant to be approved?

Once all documentation is properly submitted, the SEAI typically processes applications within 4 to 6 weeks. If an inspection is required, additional time may be needed. Most applicants receive initial approval within a few days of submission, but the final payment is made after installation and documentation verification.

What permission is needed for solar panel installation?

Commercial solar installations require:

  • Grid Access Permission from the grid operator
  • Compliance with building regulations
  • SEAI registered installer certification
  • Property owner consent (if applicable)
  • Structural assessment approval
  • Connection agreement with electricity supplier
Are solar PV panels worth it in Ireland?

Solar PV systems have proven to be a sound investment for Irish businesses, with typical systems paying for themselves within 5-6 years. Businesses can expect:

  • Up to 75% reduction in electricity bills
  • Significant protection against rising energy costs
  • Additional income potential through excess energy export
  • Enhanced environmental credentials
  • Typical system costs between €6,000 to €10,000 (after the SEAI Grant) for standard installations
  • Long-term savings with 25-30 year system lifespan
