How efficient are commercial solar panels?

Commercial solar panels typically achieve efficiency ratings between 20% and 25%. While this might seem low, even small efficiency improvements can significantly impact energy production, especially in larger installations.

Modern commercial photovoltaic panels utilise advanced technology like PERC (Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell) to maximise energy capture. For business applications, panels with efficiency ratings above 20% are often recommended to optimise roof space utilization.

What is the payback period for commercial solar installations?

The typical payback period for commercial solar installations ranges from 2 to 3 years, depending on factors such as system size, energy consumption patterns, and available grants.

How long do commercial solar panels last?

Modern commercial solar panels have a typical lifespan of 25 to 30 years, with most reputable manufacturers providing 25-year or longer production warranties. While panels don't stop working after this period, their efficiency gradually decreases at a rate of approximately 0.5% per year

This means that after 25 years, commercial solar power panels still maintain about 87.5% of their original output capacity.

What commercial Solar PV grants are available?

SEAI currently offers substantial grants for commercial solar PV Ireland installations, ranging from €2,400 up to €162,600. These solar panel grants for businesses are designed to offset initial installation costs and accelerate the transition to renewable energy.

The exact grant amount depends on the system size and business category. Solar Path can guide you through the application process to minimise the hassle and maximise your grant potential.

Can you sell excess electricity back to the grid?

Yes, through the Micro-generation Support Scheme, businesses can sell surplus electricity generated by their commercial solar power systems back to the grid. The Clean Export Guarantee (CEG) provides payments for excess energy, creating an additional revenue stream

This scheme is particularly beneficial for businesses that generate more solar power during weekends or holidays when their energy consumption is lower.

Which type of solar panel is best for commercial use?

For commercial solar installations, PERC and monocrystalline panels are typically the best choice. These panels offer higher efficiency ratings (up to 22%), greater power capacity per square meter, better performance in limited space, enhanced low-light performance, and longer lifespan and reliability.
